Kristaps Porzingis to the Spurs?
It was a bit of a surprise when the New York Knicks decided to not pick-up Kristaps Porzingis’ option and instead allow him to become a restricted free agent this coming summer.
It was certainly the right move given the fact that it frees up more cap space for the Knicks as they pursue Kevin Durant this coming summer, but it will allow another team to sign Porzingis to an offer sheet.
New York also doesn’t know how Porzingis will play after tearing his ACL last season. So of course his health is a big question mark going forward.
Now of course if a team makes Porzingis an offer, the Knicks can match it. But they may have to ultimately decide whether it’s worth it for them to match it or let him walk.
Kevin O’Connor of The Ringer mentioned that the San Antonio Spurs have a lot of interest in Porzingis.
The Spurs are also viewed as a team with significant interest in Porzingis, according to league front office sources, though it’d be difficult for San Antonio to create enough cap space this summer. The Ringer
It is a surprise to me that the Spurs would be interested in Porzingis after everything they dealt with when it came to Kawhi Leonard and his injured hip last season.
If the Knicks are able to keep Porzingis, they’re expected to offer him an incentive laden contract, just like the one that the Philadelphia 76ers gave to Joel Embiid, according to Stefan Bondy of the NY Daily News.
Right now, all we can do is wait and see what happens. I expect the Knicks to keep Porzingis, but you never know what will happen.
