James Dolan has improved as an owner
Former NBA commissioner David Stern was a guest on Bloomberg Business of Sports podcast and didn’t hold back in defending owner James Dolan by saying that he “gets a bad rap.”
“He has entrusted the Knicks with different people and given them full authority,” said Stern, via Bloomberg.com, who was the National Basketball Association’s commissioner until 2014. “And the Knicks haven’t gotten that much better.”
Stern is right, Dolan has been more hands off, which has helped the team for sure. But he still does petty stuff like Ban Charles Oakley from attending games and Stefan Bondy of the NY Daily News from press conferences for childish reasons.
With the Knicks hopefully getting Zion Williamson in this year’s NBA Draft, Stern has a message for their fanbase.
“Don’t worry,” Stern tells Knicks’ fans, “We’re gonna be roaring.”
Let’s be honest, Stern could care less about the Knicks because the NBA will be fine whether they’re good or not.
“When was the last time we had a strong team in New York? And the league is soaring,” he said. “The Knicks will come around. It’ll be their time relatively soon, I suspect.”
The Knicks have been so bad for so long that I think the NBA forgot what kind of TV ratings they bring in when they’re a premier league team fighting for a championship like they were in the 1990’s.
The fact of the matter is that the NBA would really compete with the NFL if the Knicks, Boston Celtics, Los Angeles Lakers and even the Chicago Bulls were all great at the same time.
