Should the Knicks sign Kyrie Irving if he’s available?
Aside from Kevin Durant, Celtics’ point guard Kyrie Irving has been linked to a summer move to the New York Knicks more than anyone else due to the fact that he can opt out of his contract with Boston after this season.
Irving told Celtics’ fans prior to this season that he’s not going anywhere, but then recently he made it clear he’s not sold on sticking around and hinted at being interested in playing for the Knicks.
Despite the fact that Irving is on one of the most talented teams in the Eastern Conference as well as the NBA, the Celtics been struggling a lot lately and people are starting to wonder if they need Kyrie.
Boston is a team that went all the way to the conference finals last season without Kyrie and they’ve been playing better this season when he’s not on the court.
With the rumors surrounding Irving possibly moving to the Knicks, a report came out on Monday from Kevin O’Connor of The Ringer that Irving has been disengaged as a member of the Celtics.
“Sources around the team told me that Irving’s persona has changed, too: He’s become disengaged and detached from those around the team. There is talk that Irving’s friendships on the team start and end with Tatum, with whom he shares an agent. Two sources peg Irving’s change in demeanor to early February, around the time he was asked about the possibility of joining the New York Knicks next season.”The Ringer
So, does this mean that Kyrie will leave this summer?
Right now, it doesn’t make sense for Irving to stay in Boston. He’s clearly not happy with his situation and as a team they’re not playing well with him at the point.
The other question is, does this mean Irving will sign with the Knicks?
I think it all depends on whether he would be fine with playing with another superstar in Kevin Durant. My guess is that he would be due to the fact that he’s seen how hard it is to do it by himself with a bunch of younger players around him.
Of course there is always the option of Kyrie re-joining LeBron James by signing with the Los Angeles Lakers. Right now though, it sounds like the Knicks are the front-runners.
The draw to playing for the Knicks is that Kyrie is from New Jersey and he could become a legend in New York if he can lead them to a title along with someone like Durant.
Right now, it looks like the rumors surrounding Kyrie and New York are helping the Knicks by creating issues within the Celtics organization.
